LIFE JunEx was one of the three Greek forest restoration projects presented in the Workshop on Mediterranean forest management and Natura 2000 which took place in Parc naturel régional du Luberon, France from 9–11 May 2016. The workshop is part of the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process (Mediterranean Region).
The main theme of the Workshop was the management of the Mediterranean old growth forests and their connectivity. Management and restoration of old growth forests are high in the agenda of forest conservation in West Mediterranean countries. During the workshop issues such as old growth tree and stand ecological assessment, silvicultural treatments of old growth stands for the conservation and enhancement of their value for biodiversity and the contribution of Natura 2000 network to the connectivity of natural ecosystems were discussed.
The project was presented by Dr Petros Kakouros from the Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre, the associated beneficiary of LIFE JunEx, in the group “Forest management to preserve biodiversity”.
